Bayer May Pay $1.2 Billion to Settle Yaz, Yasmin Injury Lawsuits

Overview: The Yaz, Yasmin litigation moves forward as Bayer pays millions to settle lawsuits alleging the oral contraceptives caused blood clots. Yaz Settlements Pile Up
Bayer said that it doubled its reserve funds for Yaz cases, setting aside $610.5 million. The company has already settled 1,877 Yaz, Yasmin lawsuits for $402.6, according to a report in Bloomberg Businessweek. At an average of $212,000 per claim, Bayer estimates it will spend $1.2 billion to settle the cases.
Even with the recent settlements, there are still over 12,000 lawsuits claiming that Yaz or Yasmin caused injuries. Bayer is currently only choosing to settle suits over venous blood clots, which account for roughly half of the pending suits. The company has refused to settle cases claiming that the pills caused arterial clots or gallbladder damage.
Company officials told Bloomberg that “We believe we have made appropriate provisions for most of the cases we consider to be worthy of settlement with these accounting measures.”

Background
Yaz and Yasmin are oral contraceptives that contain drospirenone, a synthetic version of the female hormone progesterone. In April, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated the label on Yaz, Yasmin and other birth control pills containing drospirenone to warn about the increased risk of blood clots. According to the agency’s Drug Safety Communication, the risk of developing a blood clot may be three times as high in women taking drospirenone-based oral contraceptives.

The Mission of Reversing the Contraceptive Mentality that Leads to Abortion

To Everyone who care to listen,

More than three decades of struggle trying to reverse the contraceptive mentality that leads to abortion  has become my mission.  My only credentials as an advocate of this truth  is that I am a wife and a mother…the target and the victim of the RH Bill.  I may be shouting the same lines…respect and care for life since my conversion in 1981…I am shouting the same call as I did in Luneta at the invitation of Cardinal Sin during the mass action against the  Cairo Conference directed towards institutionalisation of abortion globally in  the disguise of promoting contraception. I bared myself in public for the sake of the children…my own and other God’s children.  That was a long time ago…LET THIS VOICE BE HEARD…again.
I will reiterate a truth born from my experience as a former advocate of contraception and abortion who made a poor choice.    CONTRACEPTION LEADS TO ABORTION…That is a truth from a victim’s experience. That is my experience and I dare anyone to disprove it.
Intrauterine devices are abortifacients …IUDs kill babies in a mother’s womb…The IUD killed one of my babies when  I resorted to contraceptives because I did not want an abortion. Name it …I tried the “cafeteria” choices of birth control to prevent pregnancy. The choices were/are deceptions.  Insertion of IUD at PGH was free then but hospital confinement for bleeding and D and C was the patient/victim’s problem.

I may be in the twilight of my years, personally, there is nothing to be gained or lost by my  declaring this truth .  One thing is sure I have decided to continue proclaiming this truth so that souls will not be lost by the deception created by the population controllers .

May God bless our country…May He be merciful to all who are misinformed. May everyone who care to listen learn from my mistakes that I am trying to correct knowing that  God writes straight on crooked lines.

DEMOGRAPHIC WINTER: The Decline of the Human Family

What does the expression “Demographic Winter” mean?

Answer
The phrase “Demographic Winter” denotes the worldwide decline in birthrates, also referred to as a “birth-dearth,” and what it portends.

Demographer Philip Longman (author of “The Empty Cradle: How Falling Birthrates Threaten World Prosperity”) observes: “The ongoing global decline in human birthrates is the single most powerful force affecting the fate of nations and the future of society in the 21st. century.”

Worldwide, birthrates have declined by more than 50% in the past 30 years (since 1979). There are now 59 nations, with 44% of the world’s population, with below-replacement fertility

Sometime in this century, the world’s population will begin to decline. (The United Nations Population Division says that, worldwide, we could achieve below-replacement fertility by 2030.) At a certain point, the decline will become rapid. We may even reach what demographers call population free-fall in our lifetimes.

Russia is losing three-quarters-of-a-million people a year. Its population (currently 145 million) is expected to fall by one-third by 2050.

The term “nuclear winter,” popularized in the 1980s, alluded to the catastrophic environmental impact of a nuclear war. The long-term consequences of Demographic Winter could be equally devastating.

What is replacement fertility, and why is the number 2.13 so important?

Answer
Replacement fertility is the point of equilibrium at which a country’s population is neither growing nor declining. In order to maintain current population, the average woman must have 2.13 children during her lifetime. She needs to replace herself and a man. Because some children will die before reaching maturity and having children of their own, slightly more than two children are needed – hence 2.13.

A birthrate of more than 2.13 equals population growth. A birthrate of less than  2.13 means long-term population decline.

Question
If birthrates are declining, why does the world’s population continue to grow?
Answer
If it’s already in motion, car in neutral will continue moving forward  for a while, especially if it’s going downhill, even if gas isn’t being injected into the engine.

Today’s population growth is due to two factors: 1. higher fertility rates in the 1950s and 60s, and 2. people living longer than ever before.

The thing to remember is this: Declining birthrates will equal a declining population worldwide at some point in the next few decades. In the West (especially in Europe) population decline will become a reality much sooner. In some countries, such a Russia, it’s already happening.

A nation’s demographic future can be seen in its current birthrate. In Europe, the number of children under 5 has declined by 36% since 1960. Worldwide, there are 6 million fewer children, 6 and under, today, than there were in 1990. If present trends continue, the United Nations estimates that by 2050 there will be 248 million fewer children in the world then there are now.

What are the consequences of demographic decline?

Answer
Economist Robert J. Samuelson wrote in a June 15, 2005 column in The Washington Post: “It’s hard to be a great power if your population is shriveling.” Samuelson warned: “Europe as we know it is going out of business…. Western Europe’s population grows dramatically grayer, projects the U.S. Census Bureau. Now about one-sixth of the population is 65 and older. By 2030, that could be one-fourth and by 2050, almost one-third.”

By the mid-point of this century, 16% of the world’s population will be over 65. In developed nations, today, 20% of the population is over 60. By 2050, the proportion of elderly will rise to 36%. By then, these societies will have two elderly for every child.

If present low birthrates persist, the European Union estimates there will be a continent-wide shortfall of 20 million workers by 2030.

Who will operate the factories and farms in the Europe of the future? Who will develop the natural resources? Where will Russia find the soldiers to guard the frontiers of the nation with the largest land mass?

Who will care for a graying population? A burgeoning elderly population combined with a shrinking work force will lead to a train-wreck for state pension systems.

This only skims the surface of the way demographic decline will change the face of civilization. Even the environment will be adversely impacted. With severely strained public budgets, developed nations will no longer be willing to shoulder the costs of industrial clean-up or a reduction of CO2 emissions.

What is the population control movement and how has it promoted demographic winter?

Answer
The population control movement includes organizations, governments and international bodies (like the United Nations), dedicated to lower birth rates. Their methods range from the voluntary to the coercive – including forced sterilization in Peru and China’s one-child-per-family policy, which has included forced abortions. Over the course of decades, population controllers have persuaded the public, through fear and hysteria, that there are too many people in the world and drastic action must be taken to curb population growth. Their fallacies have been institutionalized and become the “standard wisdom” of Western elites.

Question
Who is Paul Ehrlich and what is his relation to declining birth rates?

Answer
An etymologist by training, Paul Ehrlich is the author of the 1968 best-seller “The Population Bomb,” and the father of the modern population control movement. In “The Population Bomb,” Dr. Ehrlich argued that population would quickly outstrip resources, leading to global starvation. (“The battle to feed humanity is over. In the 1970s, the world will undergo famine … .hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death.”) Ehrlich also argued that if voluntary limitations on population didn’t work, coercion would be necessary – a refrain taken up by the movement he spawned. He described human population growth as a cancer that would require drastic action to treat. Currently a professor at Stanford, Erhlich continues to argue that (absent draconian measures) population growth will doom the planet – this notwithstanding that none of his more sensational predictions have come to pass.

Barack Obama & the UNFPA: Two Sides Of The Same Coin

Steven Mosher, founder and president of the Population Research Institute put out a video in June of 2010, exposing the UN-endorsed depopulation policies in China that, as Mosher explains, “continue to this day.”

After the Bush administration in 2001 decided to cut US government funding for the United Nations Population Fund’s China program, the Obama administration has reinvigorated the pockets of the United Nations Population Fund with fresh federal funding. Even though many investigations exposed the UNFPA’s intimate involvement in China’s coercive birth control policies, the Obama administration apparently cares not, as it allocated $50 million to the eugenicists.

Only days after his inauguration, President Barack Obama announced he would resume funding for the UNFPA and its ‘family planning’ activities in China and elsewhere around the globe. State Department spokesman Robert Wood explained the allocation with the following argumentation:

“The United States is a global leader in promoting voluntary family planning and the health of vulnerable women and children in the developing world.”

As it turns out, the concept of voluntarism is not easily reconcilable with the Chinese government’s aim of reducing its population. On July 7th, LifeSiteNews.Com reported that UNFPA’s claim that it “played a catalytic role in introducing a voluntary reproductive health approach in China” is patently false. Steven Mosher explained the policies of the Chinese government- partially funded by the UNFPA- as follows:
“Women continue to be arrested for the crime of being pregnant. They continue to be forcibly aborted. Minorities continue to be targeted. The handicapped are forbidden children. These violations of human rights are occurring right under the UNFPA‘s nose. It is ludicrous to suggest that the UN population controllers do not know about them.”

These facts are in stark contrast with the claims of the United Nations Population Fund, who back in 2001 maintained that reproductive health programs are “fully voluntary”. The Population Research Institute however traveled to China’s provinces and counties where the UN Population people are active. What they witnessed is heart rendering:

“In every village in one UNFPA county, billboard propaganda urges women to help the economy by complying with family planning policies. PRI interviewed dozens of other women and men, all of whom confirmed- without exception- that voluntarism is non-existent in this county where UNFPA operates.”
Even today, the website of the UNFPA uses the argument of the economic crisis to convince people to cut down on the number of children:

“In the context of the financial crisis, when resources are limited, investing in family planning is even more attractive – because it is a cost-effective intervention with both short term and long term impact.”
Based on firsthand observations by the Population Research Institute, to say that the situation is dire would be an understatement:

“Only about five miles from an UNFPA office- in a county where UNFPA claims that women are free to determine the timing and spacing of their pregnancies- PRI interviewed a young woman who reported that she came under severe pressure to have an abortion. (…) To avoid a forced abortion, this woman fled to a neighboring town where she went into hiding (…). Unable to locate her, family planning officials attempted to force the woman out of hiding and into an abortion by arresting the woman’s mother, father, brother, sister, and mother- and brother-in-law. They were held in jail for four months. (…) While her relatives were being held in jail, to further increase the pressure on her to have an abortion, their homes were partly destroyed. The attack occurred on April 5, 2000, on the occasion of a major Chinese festival, Qingming. Family planning crews armed with jackhammers attacked this woman’s house, and her brother- and father-in-law’s homes, hammering great holes in the floors, walls, ceilings and roofs of these homes. In addition, they ransacked the homes.”

UNFPA’s response? In their ‘Draft country programme document for China’ in 2005, the organization states that “UNFPA will continue to use the results of the systematic monitoring, evaluation and research of its operational project sites to work with key partners to facilitate and advocate programme changes.”
Furthermore, the “draft” explains that: “UNFPA and the Government will build on previous experiences in the area of reproductive health in China, including those of partners such as the World Health Organization, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and The Ford Foundation.”

Who could these “family planning crews” be exactly, described by the Population Research Institute as thugs looking for pregnant women to intimidate? The UNFPA states that:

“The UNFPA country office consists of a representative, two national programme officers, two junior professional officers, and national programme and support staff. National project personnel may be recruited to strengthen programme implementation.”

Reproductive health: the ultimate euphemism. Just like “family planning” (who will do the planning) and “cost-effective intervention”. These are cold words from cold organizations dedicated to reduce the world’s population, the sooner the better.

Documenting these atrocities in great detail within a 2001 report by the Population Research Institute forced the Bush administration to withdraw their support and funding for the UNFPA indefinitely. Despite the alarming reports however, the current administration has resumed shaking the money-tree, providing the UNFPA with the necessary funding to continue their dubious undertakings in the People’s Republic of China. PRI’s lead investigator Colin Mason:

“The Obama administration has demonstrated an alarming ideological bent in favor of groups like the UNFPA and Planned Parenthood, groups that have been repeatedly shown a laissez-faire attitude toward human rights and national and international laws.”

“We believe that the evidence is conclusive”, stated the PRI-spokesman. “The UNFPA, contrary to its own statements, is participating in the management and support of a program of forced abortion and forced sterilization in China, and should therefore be ineligible for US funds.”

The Obama administration nevertheless has said and continues to say: “so what?”- while pouring American taxpayer money straight into China’s eugenics programs.

Top 5 Pro-RH Fallacies

Repeat a lie often enough, according to Joseph Goebbels, and it becomes a truth. Ironically, during these times, this rings true very often, especially because there has been a deluge of misinformation that has been circulated by RH backers. Here are the top 5 most outrageous fallacies that have made the rounds in forums and in debates.

1. False: The country needs to slow down its population growth rate/lower fertility rate/lessen the number of people because too many people cause poverty.
Truth: The country’s growth rate have been going down since the 60s and according to the NSO, our growth rate is at a measly 1.94%. This is without the benefit of an rh bill. On the other hand, according to the country’s premier economist, Dr. Bernardo Villegas, 200 billion pesos are lost annually due to tax evasion, and another 200 billion lost due to graft and corruption. Given these numbers, should we lessen the number of people, or curb corruption?
Truth: The Malthusian way of thinking – that too many people in a country causes poverty – has been long debunked by people like Simon Kuznets, who was a Nobel Prize winner for Economics. There has never been a clear connection between economic growth and population growth. However, in an article from the Asean Economic Bulletin entitled “The Relationship Between Population and Economic Growth in Asian Economies,” written by Wong Hock Tsen and Fumitaka Furuoka, “For China, Singapore, and the Philippines, population is found to Granger cause (or directly cause) economic growth and not vice versa. “ Similarly, reports coming from HSBC says: ““The Philippines looks set for a multi-decade run of strong growth,” and BSP Governor Amando Tetangco mentions that “the Philippine economy will get additional boost from its citizens by 2015 as it enters the demographic “sweet spot” or average age of Filipinos 22.2 years.” He cited a recent United Nations study which showed that the Philippines is the last major economy in Asia that will benefit from a period wherein bulk of the population is of working age and has the capacity to spend.
2. False: Contraceptives are safe.
Truth: In a test conducted by scientists simulating the sexual act, as much as 29 out of 89 condoms leaked. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1411838)
The IARC and the WHO have declared that combined oral contraceptives are group 1 carcinogens – meaning that they are known to cause cancer to humans, and that they, along with other materials like cigarettes and asbestos, are the most cancer-causing. Most pro-RH proponents are quick to either deny or downplay this fact. One common excuse is that even Paracetamol is cancerous (but are not taken off the shelves of pharmacies). That is just a very ignorant way of downplaying the risk. The fact remains: combined oral contraceptives cause cancer, like breast cancer. Besides, you do not take Paracetamol 21 days straight like you do with OCPs.
3. False: There are 11 mothers dying daily because the RH bill hasn’t passed yet.
 Truth: Turns out that their rallying cry of 11 mothers dying daily is outdated information. According to this article from filipinosforlife.com:
“The issue at hand is the pro-RH lobby’s emotional and exclusive use of “11 maternal deaths a day” to scare lawmakers into spending billions of pesos in taxpayers’ money for its contraception and sterilization agenda.
The pro-RH statistic is clearly outdated as attested by not one, not two, but three sets of data. If RHAN-Likhaan-DSWP cared to look elsewhere, they would have found that we had also cited the September 2010 report of the World Health Organization (WHO), Unicef, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the World Bank, which estimated annual maternal deaths in the Philippines at 2,100 in 2008. That is equivalent to 5.75 deaths a day, a completely different level than “11 a day.” This was clearly down from the 2000 level of 4,100, or 11.2 a day, which was published in a report seven years ago by the same international agencies.
We are astounded that the pro-RH lobby had to go to great lengths to justify the excessive and exclusive use of “11 a day.” We wonder why the figure is now attributed to government statistical agencies, when before, credit was given to the UNFPA and other international bodies. Did the lobbyists misrepresent old data as current? There is a word for that: disingenuous.
That is the plain, ugly truth: the RH camp lied, and continues to lie, about their own data. If they can be dishonest with this and appeal to emotions by using bloated numbers, I believe they are capable of more dishonesty. Like the next one.
4. False: The Church is against the RH Bill; ergo the Church is against women’s health.
Truth: You might have heard this before. And a whole lot of other baseless accusations like “the Church is the enemy of progress,” or “the Church is against science.”  I do not know how that applies as an educated comment, because historians would attribute things like the scientific method and the university system to the Catholic Church. Why is the Church against the RH bill? Precisely because it wants to safeguard women. The prophecies of Pope Paul VI about what would happen if the Church’s teaching on contraception were ignored come to mind:

• Infidelity and moral decline

The Pope first noted that the widespread use of contraception would “lead to conjugal infidelity and the general lowering of morality.” That there has been a widespread decline in morality, especially sexual morality, in the last 25 years, is very difficult to deny. The increase in the number of divorces, abortion, our-of-wedlock pregnancies, and venereal diseases should convince any skeptic that sexual morality is not the strong suit of our age.

• Lost Respect for Women

The Pope realized that the Church’s teaching on contraception is designed to protect the good of conjugal love. When spouses violate this good, they do not act in accord with their innate dignity and thus they endanger their own happiness. Treating their bodies as mechanical instruments to be manipulated for their own purposes, they risk treating each other as objects of pleasure.

• Abuse of Power

Paul VI also observed that the widespread acceptance of contraception would place a “dangerous weapon… in the hands of those public authorities who take no heed of moral exigencies.” The history of the family-planning programs in the Third World is a sobering testimony to this reality. Moreover, few people are willing to recognize the growing evidence that many parts of the world face not overpopulation, but underpopulation. It will take years to reverse the “anti-child” mentality now entrenched in many societies.

• Unlimited Dominion

Pope Paul’s final warning was that contraception would lead man to think that he had unlimited dominion over his own body. Sterilization is now the most widely used form of contraception in the U.S.; individuals are so convinced of their rights to control their own bodies that they do not hesitate to alter even their own physical make-up.
5. False: The RH Bill will uplift the lives of the poor.
Truth: The only way to uplift the lives of the poor is through education. People may ask, why not do both – give contraceptives and educate? Because in a world where governments are asking their citizens to bear more children because of the effects of demographic winter, we cannot afford to follow their example.
Truth: We have yet to see someone who became rich because he wore condoms. The poor who use the contraceptives given to them remain poor; the educated child, however, has a real fighting chance to uplift himself and his family from poverty.

Giant LIFE Balloon Rosary seen by Thousands over Chicago's Downtown CHICAGO (August 15, 2011) Just in time for the Feast of the Assumption of our Lady, a 75-foor rosary floats skyward from Chicago's Michigan Avenue Bridge claiming the Magnificent Mile for Mary. A giant rosary floated gracefully over Chicago's busy tourism district on Friday as thousands looked on. The six-foot gold cross hanging from the rosary sparkled in the sunlight as it very slowly ascended between the Tribune tower and the Wrigley building. The rosary of helium-filled yellow balloons bearing the word LIFE then floated down Michigan Avenue over the Hancock Tower and past North Ave Beach. Cameras and cellphones flew into action as people responded to the unexpected sight. "There was an excitement all around us and there were people in tears at the sight of the rosary. I think we often take it for granted the power of a simple witness to the faith," said a camp counselor. A passerby tweeted, "A balloon rosary in the air. My faith confirmed :)", while another surprised Chicagoan wrote, "what the... giant balloon rosary, with cross, just floated heavenward from the Michigan avenue bridge." The rosary was the craft of 20 imaginative elementary-school-aged girls and their counselors participating in a summer camp at a Chicago Catholic Parish. The girls prayed the rosary in front of the Washington Blvd. Family Planning Associates asking Our Lady for an end to abortion. They then carried the rosary, cross-first, through downtown Chicago's peak traffic to the cheers, and sometimes jeers, of pedestrians and motorists. Homeless people gave high fives, street preachers started singing Gospel songs, and semi-truck drivers shook the streets sounding their truck horns in approval. "I was completely ecstatic the whole time. I loved seeing how many people on a random street corner were thrilled. It is a lot more than we tend to think," said one participant. One of the girls said, "It was the prettiest rosary I have ever seen. I liked how it would float up and sit and then float up and sit. It looked really pretty against the buildings and the sky." Another camper said, "The best way to describe it was 'beautiful'. I didn't see one frowning face. It evangelized everyone who saw it." This is the latest of a series of spontaneous acts of joy across the United States involving the yellow LIFE balloons.
